Stomp '09, which is now touring Australia and New Zealand and opened in Melbourne this week, is a wonderfully manic blend of dance, music and comedy. Eight incredibly energetic performers create infectious rhythms using their bodies and every conceivable ordinary, everyday 'instrument': booted feet, hands and bodies combine with sand, rubber hoses, rubbish bags, brooms, paint tins and a host of other mundane items to ignite the stage and the audience.

STOMP reportedly started life in 1991 as a single drum hanging around the neck of Luke Cresswell, a self taught percussionist from Brighton, England. As a session drummer and rhythm programmer he has worked with the likes of Bette Midler, Elvis Costello and Bryan Ferry. When Cresswell teamed up with Steve McNicholas, an actor/singer/musician/writer from Yorkshire, an original member of the a capella group The Flying Pickets, the original STOMP was born and has now entertained some 14 million people across 43 countries from London's West End, where it has run for six years, to the US, earning an Olivier Award and a gig at the Oscars ceremony. It now encompasses 100 performers over five companies. That's some success and heightens the expectations of any audience member. Stomp '09 introduces new music and choreography along with eight wonderfully athletic and energetic performers.

Early in the performance, which runs for 80 minutes, I found myself wondering where else they could go, having started with brooms, sand and a soft shoe shuffle: what was left that would be new and exciting? As it turned out, plenty. The performers create eight very distinctive characters, each with their own style and idiosyncrasies, and add an entertaining mix of comedy, both broad and subtle, to the dance and rhythm making. Paul Bend is the standup, a tall skinny comic who never quite gets things right. In contrast there's the tough guy complete with mohawk (John Sawicki) and the working man in overalls Nathanial Conroy. But it is totally unfair to single out any one of the eight, which also includes R J Samson, Keith Middleton (a tall slender black man complete with long dreads), Aideen Gallagher; Sarah Lasaki, and Troy Sexton, because this is truly an ensemble work. The eight work together as a well integrated team: you need to see the sequence which has paint tins of various sizes flying across the stage to create a distinctive rhythm without missing a beat. It's a cross between juggling, dance and percussion.

It is astonishing and exhilarating to experience what can be done without words – just body language and found sound. The momentum steadily builds, with the audience slowly but surely being drawn into the action, to culminate in a loud and enthusiastic finale with performers and audience working together to create they music.

Stomp '09 is fast, furious and very funny.

Definitely not to be missed concert. Especially for percussionists.

And listen to what Mr.Tan is teaching.

It's gonna be a short post, just to please you people. -_- Band room will be opened on monday, 8 june for junior band practice 1pm-5pm and on the next day too but the time is not confirmed. Call or message the bls if you want to come back on tuesday to self-practice. There will also be NO band practices during the third week of the holidays so go and borrow your instruments before then to self-practice at home so you have more time to practice before presentation night. Remember to balance your time, work hard and play hard.

First of all will be your reflections for the hongkong trip.
You are required to write under two categories namely the musical & cutural.
Musical-exchanges with PLK school & festival winds, hk disneyland performance and also the tutoring at Tom Lee music school.
Cultural-can be on anything.
Pls note that you have to hand up your reflection by next THURSDAY(4/12).

Secondly, if any of you are going overseas during dec and you cant make it for any of the practices(refer to notice board for the dates and timings for practices), you will have to produce proof to show that your trip has been confirmed.
P.s. Parents letter are not allowed.
This is to be done by next thursday.

Lastly, for those who took pictures during the hk trip, it will be great if you can pick out a few which you think is presentable/show what we've learnt there so that we can consolidate these pics into a powerpoint. You can send it to any of the teachers or bls.

oh yes. today is melizo.
and it seems like quite a few of our band peeps have gone to watch the choir.
that's not the main point. >.<
anyway, 2 weeks later, it will be our turn on that stage during this time.
just 2 weeks later not 2 months.
and as shihui has said, 4/5 more band pracs to sight read first love and trombone concerto and work on all pieces as a band.

and we have 14 days to work ourselves. minus off the number of hours you sleep, travel to school, study, band practices etc.
i would estimate an average of 3 hours to practise everyday.
and those who dont bring home instruments, mouthpieces, sticks etc to prac, minus off sat and sun.
so basically, you have about 3 x 5 = 15 hours to practise everything.
fast isnt it? because you have 5 school days, 1 band prac and 1 sectionals taking up 2 days in a week.

so do treasure the time you have to practise.
14 days will just fly past very quickly.
and you will feel as if you had not had enough time to practise.

well, basically just here to update on events coming up in case all of you still dont know.
14th to 16th nov: band camp
22nov (tentatively): ensemble competition [it applies to junior band too]
11th to 13th dec: band chalet

please check the noticeboard for the times of the band practices instead of asking the BLs or SLs.
unless there are additional practices that are not confirmed yet.
once the BLs know, they will immediately tell the SLs to inform their section.
so dont worry.

10 days to band camp.
18 days to ensemble competition.
37 days to band chalet.
*the number of days include today.

ensemble competition is not far away.
18 days is not very long.
and in actual fact, your ensemble pieces should be ready by band camp.
so that is just 10 days.
excluding today, thursday [deepavali], next saturday and sunday, you have only 6 days to practise.

and you also have your major scales and minor scales by band camp too.

originally, it is supposed to be from 8.30am to 3.30pm.

now, it has been changed from 10.30am to 6pm.

please note that both junior band and main band will have to know the following scales by the first day of band camp.

junior band: 8 major scales (you should know) and any 2 minor scales, both harmonic and melodic

please go and learn all the scales.

for both junior band and main band, all of you are required to be able to play the major scales in the scale patterns.

minor scales include arpeggios.

by the way, i havent been seeing a lot of people going back to the band room everyday.

it is always the same few people i see.

band room will be opened at 8am everyday excluding saturday and sundays unless stated otherwise.

also, usually it will not close that early unless for special reasons.

so, i dont see why so many of you are not coming back to practise.

i know it is the holidays but the holidays are not only for you to enjoy.

it is the time in which you can brush up on your playing of instrument.

and since the leaders are making an effort to come early and stay till late for all of you to practise, appreciate it.

on a lighter note, please dont forget about the band chalet.

WELL DONE!!
think the sec1s did quite well.digital prism sounded quite nice for sec1s. anyway, if im nt wrong the main band play digital prism three yrs ago for Xinfony. so the band standard is really improving.keep it up!!
but smth to take note of..i think the secs should learn to enjoy when performing. could hear tt u guys were a little tense n nt throughly enjoying it.
main band ppl..why so little ppl turn up to support?this r ur juniors leh..nxt time u ppl must go ok..

hi all! posting in progress..

main band:
work on techniques!
go learn major and minor scales.
practise tonguing by following a metronome and tongue scales with different note values especially triplets and semiquavers.
work on air support too!
improve sightreading by sightreading technique books.
at the same time, you can improve both techniques and sightreading.
brasses, please start working on akiyama in semiquavers and more lip slurs.
woodwinds, work more on running notes.
percussionists, ask seniors.

junior band:
practise tonguing clearly.
breathe more!
train air support!
work on your pieces, especially my favourite things and digital prisms.
for efficient self practice, please do not just keep playing and playing the whole score through.
look at the dynamics and also the articulation.
and add your feelings into the song!
it will make you feel better and the people hearing will be happy. xP
must work hard for junior band festival!
any parts that you dont know how to play, please approach your seniors!
your deadlines are coming!
9/8 => my favourite things: more feelings for this piece please. remember, it is not a lively piece. just happy. ((:
31/8 => digital prisms: articulation is important and get the style right! practise with a metronome. dont rush or slow down.

lastly, it is self practice, not group practice.
please refrain from practising as a group until you can play your parts well.
if not, it will not be very useful by doing so.
so.. all the best for your junior band festival!
the seniors will help you along and cheer you on! xD

i miss blogging for u ppl..anyway concert is jz 2 days away..sec4s, two more dyas before we say bye..

i think this journey has been a very meomorable one for everyone..though there were tears and scoldings, there were lotsa fun too right? i know tt u ppl will defintely miss band. Jia you 4 ur Os ok? band members r strong n determined..nothing is impossible.

for the members who r not graduating..remember to thank ur seniors..they hv really gave alot for the band.. make this a successful concert and let them graduate with a peace of mind and without regrets ok? on behalf of all the graduating members, WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
